GAIL, Karnataka to Jointly Develop One GW Green Energy Capacity

15 May 2025
GAIL (India) Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Karnataka to develop renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of up to one gigawatt over the next five years. Signed in Bengaluru on 9 May 2025, the agreement aligns with GAIL鈥檚 goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035.

The Karnataka government will assist in approvals, clearances, and incentives as per current policies. Planned projects include ground-mounted, rooftop and floating solar systems, wind energy, and battery storage solutions. The initiative aims to boost Karnataka鈥檚 clean energy capacity while generating employment and supporting infrastructure growth.

GAIL鈥檚 transition from a gas utility to a diversified energy firm includes electrification of operations, green hydrogen exploration, and carbon dioxide valorisation. The company has committed Rs 50 Bn to this effort and plans to secure land via farmer leases and support from the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board.

The move reinforces Karnataka鈥檚 role as a green energy hub and supports India鈥檚 national target of net-zero emissions by 2070. GAIL鈥檚 earlier timeline of 2035 sets a precedent for the industry and contributes to broader climate goals through sustainable infrastructure expansion.
