Jamia Milia Islamia, AMU invent eco-friendly cement using waste

The civil engineering faculty at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in Delhi and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh developed an environmental friendly version of cement in response to the alarming figures of cement production.

It can be used to replace 5-20% of cement in the construction process. Manufacturing of one tonne of cement can result in the release of up to 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. The ubiquitous material, which is used to build the majority of structures around the world, is also the world's third-largest carbon dioxide emitter.

While the world has produced 8 billion tonnes of plastic, more than twice that amount of cement is produced every two years, according to a 2018 report by Chatham House (a London-based non-profit organisation). Closer to home, India produced 329 million tonnes (mt) of cement in 2020, with projections of 381 mt in 2022.

While cement is the most common building material, it has a huge environmental impact. As a result, the world requires widespread adoption of less harmful and environmentally friendly cement alternatives.

Dr Ibadur Rahman, Mohammad Arif, Professor Abdul Baqi, Dr M Shariq, Er Mohammad Gamal Al-Hagri, and Er Amer Saleh Ali Hasan invented the green adhesive formula.

Four years ago, Dr Rahman began experimenting with and decoding nano-based modified cement and concrete composites.

unWOOD transforms plastic waste into durable wood alternative

unWOOD, a breakthrough innovation, is converting hard-to-recycle plastic waste into a durable alternative to natural wood. Developed through a proprietary process called Intelligent Compounding, unWOOD uses a Macro Molecular Fiber Matrix (MMFM) structure to replicate the strength, look, and feel of hardwood鈥攚ithout the environmental cost.Conceptualised by Dr Babu Padmanabhan, the material addresses key flaws in traditional plastic recycling by consuming minimal energy, using zero water, and generating no microplastics. 鈥淎ny application that introduces plastics into areas where it cannot be..
