TS Das, Managing Director, Petron Engineering Construction Ltd (PECL)Perseverance and the pursuit of excellence do pay off. With over 600 projects in diversified sectors like oil and gas, power, cement, petrochemical and fabrication work, Petron Engineering Construction Ltd (PECL) has emerged as one of the frontrunners of the construction and engineering industry today.
TS Das, Managing Director, Petron Engineering Construction Ltd, tells us more about the company, its strengths and strategies....
Please take us through the high-points of the company's journey. Petron Engineering Construction Ltd (PECL) was incorporated on July 19, 1976, as a private limited company. It was promoted by RS Ambekar, MK Nair and the late S Chuckerbutty, all technocrats working as senior executives in Simon Carves India Ltd. Owing to their vast experience in the construction industry, they were able to build a team of professionals and became successful in forming a specialised construction company. The company has grown from strength to strength and, today, PECL is engaged in providing EPC solutions and construction services in structural, mechanical, civil, piping, electrical, instrumentation, painting and refractory activities. It is active in the field of oil and gas, refineries, power, cement, petrochemicals and metallurgical industries, and undertakes turnkey execution of fired heaters and other units in the oil and gas sector. It became a public limited company on March 1995.
PECL was acquired by KazstroyService Ltd UK (KSS) in January 2008 to enter the league of global engineering majors. KSS, a leading EPC company in Kazakhstan, operates in the oil and gas sector, including cross-country pipelines, oil refineries and on-shore infrastructure for the oil and gas industry. Today, KSS has completed, to the highest international standards, projects across the map from Kazakhstan to India, through EPC related to the oil and gas industry in accordance with international quality standards, safety and management systems. The KSS group has worked with a range of world-class clients like AGIP (Axxon, Chevron, E&I), KPO (Shell and BG), Siemens, Kaztransoil, KMG, IOCL and many more. The acquisition by KSS will help PECL move up the value chain.
How many projects have you completed? Today, PECL has to its credit over 120 fired heaters for refineries, 45 power projects and 40 cement plants-in total about 800 projects. The company has valuable and rich experience in the fields of refineries, power, cement, petrochemicals and fertiliser plants. PECL also has in-house capabilities to undertake specialised insulation and refractory works, fabrication works and electrical and instrumentation works. We take pride in the fact that many customers have given us repeat orders, thus reposing complete faith in our capabilities to carry out these multidisciplinary complex projects in tight delivery schedules with stringent quality norms.
Technological advancement has always been one of Petron's major strengths. Please highlight the major technologies used in your projects. Petron has in-house capabilities to carry out multidisciplinary construction jobs. We have in-house capabilities in thermal, mechanical and structural design of fired heaters, waste heat boilers and steam super heaters. The necessary engineering software packages are available with us to carry out the same. PECL has heavy-duty cranes and expertise to handle heavy construction work. We are continuously expanding our fleet of construction machinery to cater to the increased workload. We are also upgrading ourselves with advanced technologies to improve productivity especially in piping work with exotic materials for critical processes and high-pressure services.
Construction safety is an important aspect of project execution. What are the safety standards adopted by Petron? Safety at Petron involves rigorous implementation of health, safety and environment (HSE) measures. Continuous health and safety surveillance is carried out by means of safety audits at regular intervals. Regular training, including safety alerts, mock drills and handling near-miss incidents, is carried out to update the knowledge base, reinforce familiarity with work environment and reduce response time. Other safety practices include monthly safety awards, celebration of national safety day and environment day at all sites. We have been accredited with OHSAS 18001:2007 (occupational health and safety assessment series) certificate in October 2009. Further, we have also been certified to ISO 14001:2004 for the environmental management system. We have received many safety awards, appreciation letters and certificates from clients for our safety records.
Please tell us about the company's overseas operations. Petron has worked overseas in construction works in countries such as Nigeria, Yemen, UAE, Bhutan and Kuwait. These projects were executed on a case-to-case basis without any focus on a specific country on a long-term basis. However, with the acquisition of PECL by KSS in 2008, we are trying to re-establish its presence in the Middle East on a long-term basis. We are eyeing the opportunities in Gulf countries, especially Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait. We are also actively pursuing opportunities in Bangladesh. We hope that in the next two years, we will have some big value export orders so that we can balance the earnings from domestic and export orders as these are cyclic in nature.
One of the most important resources of any organisation is its employees. Please highlight the various HRD initiatives undertaken by the company. People are at the forefront of all initiatives at Petron. We are not only committed to the development of our people but also strive to ensure that the competencies of our people are aligned to business goals. In the present technology-driven scenario, we strongly believe in elevating our knowledge and skills to ensure our competitive advantage within the industry. Our ability to attract and retain the best of talent substantiates our commitment towards our people.
The company has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by Inc India for its exemplary growth and sustainable success. Please elaborate on your quality standards.PECL's sustained growth for over three decades is because of the excellent quality standards maintained by the company. The management believes that quality and timely completion are the main pillars of success in the construction industry. Adopting these principles has given Petron an edge over other companies in its formative and growing years. PECL has been accredited with ISO 9001:2008 for quality system management, OHSAS 18001: 2007 for health and safety management and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management system. The manufacturing division of PECL-Petrofab division has been certified to U & R stamps by ASME enabling it to carry out the fabrication and repair of pressure vessels as per ASME code with U & R stamps respectively. This division is also ISO 9001: 2000 certified and IBR and PESO (CCOE) approved shop.
What is the vision and strategy for the company going ahead? Our vision is to be the most preferred EPC company in the industry with special focus and emphasis on delivering quality products and services to our clients. Our mission is to continuously provide professional services in the field of industrial and infrastructure development. Our strategy is to enter into EPC projects in oil and gas, small power and cement, leveraging our capabilities in construction, engineering and procurement. This may involve tying up with suitable partners in engineering, procurement and construction depending upon the job requirement. We are determined to increase our top-line growth and take the company to the next level in infrastructure construction.
