Biogas plant to illuminate LT market along Metro 3 corridor

The Mumbai Metro Railway Corporation (MMRC), overseeing the redevelopment of buildings for the Kalbadevi and Girgaon Metro stations, is establishing a biogas plant as part of its efforts to promote eco-friendly practices and sustainable development. It has been revealed that the clean energy generated by the plant will be utilized to illuminate the LT Market at Grant Road East.

It was mentioned that the plant will make use of organic wet waste collected by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This initiative is part of the broader project for the underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 Corridor, which focuses on urban redevelopment with an emphasis on environmentally friendly practices.

The MMRC, in collaboration with the BMC, is implementing the initiative in accordance with the environmental clearance granted to the redevelopment project at Kalbadevi-Girgaon (K3 building).

It was further disclosed that a 1.5 TPD capacity bio-methanation plant will be established to enable the production of clean energy from organic wet waste sourced from hotels, restaurants, banquet halls, municipal markets, etc. The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs 74.61 lakh, and the work contractor responsible for the project is Aerocare Aviation Services.

The significance of the project includes the processing of 1,000 tonnes of wet waste daily by the biogas plant, generating 80-100 kWh of green energy per hour, illuminating the LT Market at Grant Road East, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and significantly lowering the transportation cost of waste.
