Four firms in race for waste-to-energy plan project

Reports indicate that four companies are in the race for the proposed plant that would convert solid waste into power at Brahmapuram in Ernakulam district, Kerala.

Soon, the Kerala Suchitwa Mission (KSM) would recommend the state government on which firm should be selected for the project.

It is learnt that these four firms have qualified for the final stage of the tendering process after financial and technical bidding stages.

The plant would require about 10 acre land, out of the nearly 110 acre is available at Brahmapuram. The new plant will replace all other forms of waste management projects going on there.

The plant will be able to process both organic and inorganic waste. Different firms have given various time frames for the execution of the project - from one year to one-and-a-half year.

Using thermal processing technology, the proposed plant would process 300 tonne of waste per day. Some of the firms have submitted proposals for incinerator-based plants while some have mooted gas-based plants.

The quantum of electricity generated by the plant would depend on the kind of technology used by it. KSEB will buy power generated from the plant. "If the cost of power is higher than the rate at which KSEB buys from other stations, the government will provide the difference, reports indicate.
