Amazon, TotalEnergies inks PPA for supplying 474 MW renewable energy

France-based TotalEnergies, a leading oil and gas company, and Amazon have announced a partnership in which TotalEnergies will provide Amazon with 100% renewable energy for its operations.
TotalEnergies will supply 474 MW of renewable energy to Amazon in the United States and Europe under a power purchase agreement (PPA) signed by the two companies.
Both companies are also planning to expand their collaboration in the Middle East and the Asia Pacific.
TotalEnergies would thus support Amazon in meeting its goal of using renewable energy to power all of its operations by 2030 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Amazon, on the other hand, will provide cloud computing services via Amazon Web Services (AWS) to help TotalEnergies improve its information technology and digitalise its operations.
The digital factory intends to strengthen its infrastructure, speed, reliability, and innovative services by utilising cloud computing.
TotalEnergies currently has 7 GW of renewable energy capacity around the world, with plans to increase that to 35 GW by 2025 and 100 GW by 2030.
President of Gas, Renewables and Power at TotalEnergies, Stephane Michel, noted that the company is committed to lowering its carbon footprint and assisting its customers to do the same worldwide.
Michel added that the company is relying on Amazon and AWS to help them progress in their accelerating shift in the speed, scale, and advancement of digitalization.
Amazon launched a $1 billion sustainability bond in May to fund ongoing and new green projects across five important green zones. Through the green, social, and sustainability bonds, the corporation is anticipated to finance green and social projects.
Amazon announced 26 new utility-scale wind and solar energy projects with a combined capacity of 3.4 GW in December 2020, bringing its total renewable energy investment in 2020 to 35 projects with a total capacity of more than 4 GW.
