Mizoram Launches Rooftop Solar Scheme under PM-Surya Ghar Yojana

Mizoram's Power and Electricity Minister Rodingliana has introduced a new initiative under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY), enabling households to install rooftop solar systems at subsidised rates. The scheme aims to reduce electricity bills and promote energy self-sufficiency among residents. During a press briefing in Aizawl, the minister highlighted the Centre's subsidy program, which supports domestic solar power generation. The nationwide scheme targets one crore households, providing subsidised solar systems to promote sustainability and reduce dependence on external power sources. The scheme is exclusively available to Indian citizens residing in private residential properties, excluding government and institutional buildings. Eligible applicants must have good electricity payment records and ensure their details match the information on their electricity bills. Mizoram has partnered with 12 authorized vendors to facilitate installations, with financial assistance available through banks like SBI and MRB for local residents. The installation cost is Rs 12,000 within Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits and Rs 18,000 for locations beyond 200 km from AMC. So far, 2,990 households have registered for the scheme, with 557 applications already approved. For solar systems up to 10 kilowatts, residents must first register on the state portal, pmsuryaghar.mizoram.gov.in, and then on the national portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Approved consumers can choose government-authorised vendors for installation, which includes five years of maintenance services. (ET)
