NHDC to construct 525 MW Pumped Storage Project in Madhya Pradesh

NHDC, which stands for Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation, has undertaken the construction of a 525 MW Pumped Storage Project near Indira Sagar Dam in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. The project utilises the existing reservoirs, Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar, of the Indira Sagar Project. The primary objective of this project is to meet the increasing demand for electricity during peak hours in the state. By harnessing renewable energy through this Pumped Storage Project, the state can fulfill its energy requirements during the morning and evening peak hours. It is expected that the project will generate approximately 1,226.93 million units of energy during these peak hours.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 42 billion, and the Department of New & Renewable Energy, Government of Madhya Pradesh, has assigned this project to NHDC Limited.

Madhya Pradesh has the potential to develop 11.2 GW of Pumped Storage Projects. Currently, NHDC Limited operates two power stations in the Khandwa district: the Indira Sagar Power Station with a capacity of 1000 MW and the Omkareshwar Power Station with a capacity of 520 MW. All the power generated by these stations is supplied to Madhya Pradesh.

NHDC has plans to transform the state into a "green state" by focusing on the production of green energy through the construction of solar power projects. Currently, they are in the process of building an 8 MW solar project in the historic city of Sanchi and an 88 MW floating solar project on the Omkareshwar Reservoir.

NHDC is a joint venture between NHPC and the Government of Madhya Pradesh. For more detailed information about the company, please visit their website.
