Volvo Penta, the marine unit of Volvo, has entered into a strategic partnership with FTMH (Fantuzzi Team Material Handling), an Italian heavy equipment manufacturer, to collaborate on the development of a comprehensive lineup of electric forklifts. The joint effort aims to create a range of electric-powered forklifts capable of lifting weights up to 52 tonnes. The initial model slated for electrification is the FTF 26-12, a 26 tonne capacity forklift that currently relies on a Volvo Penta D8 engine. Port operations and logistic terminals are well-suited for electrification, and there is a significant potential for fleets utilising zero-emission vehicles, including forklifts, empty container handlers, reachstackers, and terminal tractors. With robust infrastructure and clearly defined duty cycles, a smooth transformation within the industry is anticipated, resulting in reduced noise levels, increased uptime, and enhanced productivity. For the past decade, FTMH has successfully incorporated Volvo Penta D11 diesel engines into its range of reachstackers for container handling, weighing 45 tonnes.
