Delhi international airport may emerge as the second-largest airport in the world after the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the US, with an estimated passenger capacity of 109 million passengers by 2024, according to Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister, Civil Aviation. Delhi airport has a capacity of close to about 70 million and we are going to go to about 109 million throughput capability by next year, which means we will probably become the second-largest airport in the world after Atlanta, he said. He highlighted that in the next three to five years, capital expenditure of about `980 billion will be undertaken of which `200 to 250 billion worth of investment will be undertaken by the Airports Authority of India. The share of the private sector’s investment at about Rs.600 billion will comprise development of three Greenfield and seven Brownfield airports. In a related development, he laid the foundation stone of the new terminal building at Rajahmundry airport in Andhra Pradesh. The terminal building will be 21,094 sq m and capable of serving 2100 passengers during peak hours and 3 million passengers annually.
