Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways and MSME Nitin Gadkari recently reviewed the proposed Chambal Express Project through video conference with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan; Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar; and Member of Parliament Jyotiraditya Scindya.Speaking during the meeting, Gadkari, as per a release by PIB, laid emphasis on expeditious environment clearance, land acquisition and royalty/local tax exemptions to make the project see the light of the day soon. He underlined that apart from providing smooth traffic and goods movement, the project will immensely benefit the area and people of the backward region along the expressway. He also stated that land acquisition should cater to the development of wayside amenities besides industrial and commercial clusters with the potential to have smart cities, mandis, humar haats, etc, on both sides. Thus, the project offers huge employment potential in these districts and adjoining areas. The Rs.82-billion project, passing through Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, envisages connecting Bhind to Kota. It also will provide cross-connectivity with the Golden Quadrilateral's Delhi-Kolkata, North-South and East-West corridors and the Delhi-Mumbai-Expressway.Laying stress on the need to bring down the cost of the project, the minister said that royalty and tax exemption on the project material will save over Rs.10 billion. He also suggested that the chief ministers of the states through which the road will pass chair a state-level, high-powered committee meeting to sort out all state-specific issues, which will facilitate faster implementation at optimal cost. Madhya Pradesh has already exempted royalty on minerals for this project.Further, Gadkari has directed the chairman of NHAI to prepare a DPR at the earliest. The project is expected to be completed in about two years after land acquisition. He recommended the formation of a Chambal Development Authority for better coordination and progress in this region and called upon the states to sort out forest, environment and land acquisition issues on top priority.
