The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to deploy a network survey vehicle (NSV) with the aim to enhance the overall quality of National Highways.NSV uses survey techniques such as a digital camera for 360掳 imagery and to record images and videos at regular intervals, laser road profilometer and other related technology for the measurement of distresses in the road surface. It also helps collate data to analyse road conditions, including measurement of the surface, surface cracking, potholes and patches, and provides data insights relating to side drains, road furniture, etc.Carrying out road condition surveys using NSV on National Highways has been made mandatory at the time of certifying completion of a project and every six months thereafter. The provision has also been included as part of the standard bidding document of consultancy services. The data collected through the NSV survey shall be uploaded on NHAI鈥檚 AI-based portal data lake, where it shall be analysed by the Road Asset Management Cell (RAMS Cell) to assess the condition and roughness of the road to prioritise for maintenance. The data will help maintain up-to-date asset inventory and status on the condition of road assets. Apart from delivering vital information on road network planning and providing relevant information on other aspects such as the development of road safety measures, it will also assist in developing highway maintenance strategies, analysis of maintenance and selection of an optimal maintenance regime. The data will highlight deficiencies in road conditions, prompting BOT operators and NHAI officials to take corrective steps to bring conditions to the desired level. This will further result in better upkeep of National Highways, leading to more comfort and a better travel experience for highway users.
