The Indian Railways has chalked out a plan to purchase new trains worth Rs.1 trillion over the next few years to cater to the rising demand in the passenger travel segment on the national transporter, said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister, Railways. The Indian Railways is currently running 10,754 daily train trips and plans to add 3000 more to bring down the waiting list to zero. The national transporter is already running 568 more trips as compared with pre-COVID-19 years. This enables the Railways to ferry 7 billion passengers every year, a number which is projected to rise to 10 billion by 2030. He said that there needs to be a 30 per cent increase in the number of trips to eliminate the issue of wait-listing in the passenger category, except during peak demand months by the end of this decade. In a related development, the Indian Railways will invest at least Rs.7 trillion over the next decade to lay a record 50,000 km of new train tracks to modernise its network and boost train speeds. The railways now want to go into mission mode to improve connectivity with modern tracks that can handle higher speed trains such as Vande Bharat.
