IT Ministry finalising voluntary code of conduct and ethics for AI companies

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (IT Ministry) is in the process of finalizing a voluntary code of conduct and ethics for Artificial Intelligence (AI) companies. Sources have revealed that the government is engaging in discussions with industry stakeholders, including companies and experts, to develop a comprehensive framework that ensures ethical practices in AI development and deployment.

The proposed code will cover crucial areas such as data usage, data privacy, labeling, and transparency. A key focus will be on guiding AI companies on how to handle data responsibly and avoid any misuse or harm. The development of the code comes at a time when there is a global surge in AI advancements, with countries around the world stressing the importance of responsible AI practices.

This initiative follows a series of consultations, including one organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the IT Ministry, aimed at establishing safety and ethical standards in AI technologies. India is positioning itself as a leader in AI development, with a focus on creating policies that ensure accessibility and inclusivity in AI technologies under its 鈥楢I for All鈥 vision.

In addition, India鈥檚 ambitious 'IndiaAI Mission,' which has been backed with over Rs 10,000 crore in funding, is driving efforts toward creating indigenous AI frameworks. The mission focuses on fostering innovation, supporting startups, and promoting safe and trusted AI systems.

A central pillar of the IndiaAI Mission is ensuring that AI is developed and deployed in a safe, accountable, and ethical manner, with the goal of democratizing AI and enabling its benefits to be felt across all sectors of the economy.
