Tata Steel Kalinganagar launches robotic system for Wagon Tippler

Tata Steel Kalinganagar, a steel factory in Jajpur, Odisha, has upgraded its Wagon Tippler operation with a new robotic system.

Tippling procedures at the raw-material handling system of the plant include decoupling, coupling, rotation, and CBC alignment of waggons via physical intervention on both the inhaul and outhaul sides.

During each cycle, empty waggons are linked with empty waggons in the outhaul area after a Wagon tippling operation on the Tippler table.

The couplers must be aligned for proper coupling of both waggons, which is now done manually by a designated person in high-risk conditions.

As a result, a novel robotics operating system for Wagon Tippler has been introduced to eliminate the man-machine contact while handling Railway waggons following a tippling operation during each cycle.

The new system was inaugurated on July 21st by T V Narendran, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Steel Limited (TSL).

The Wagon couplers at outhaul will be inspected through and aligned by a robotic system under the new system of operation before being linked. During each tippling cycle, the man-machine interface will be fully eliminated, assuring safety while also contributing to increased production.

The new technology has already been installed in one of the Wagon Tipplers and will be deployed horizontally in others.

This technology is complemented by a specially built Smart Fencing System with Automated Gate Locking Facility to prevent unwanted entry while the equipment is in use.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were Anupam, MD Tata Steel LP and Chairperson M&S (Long Products), Chaitanya Bhanu, PEO, Chanakya Chaudhary, VP (Corporate Services), Dibyendu Bose, Vice President (Supply Chain), Peeyush Gupta, Vice President (Supply Chain-Designate) and Rajiv Kumar, Tata Steel Kalinganagar Vice President (Operation).

The event was organised by C L Karn, Chief, Logistics Operations, Tata Steel Kalinganagar.

Tata Steel Group ranks among the top global steel companies, with an annual crude steel capacity of 34 million tonnes. In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021, the group (excluding SEA operations) reported a consolidated turnover of $21.1 billion.
