In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion along the Sion-Panvel Highway, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is spearheading the Kharghar-Turbhe Tunnel Road project. This initiative is set to redefine the commuting experience in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), promising improved connectivity and reduced travel times for thousands of commuters.
The Kharghar-Turbhe Tunnel Road project involves the construction of a 1.763 km long tunnel on the proposed 5.490 km Kharghar-Turbhe Link Road (KTLR), with an estimated budget of Rs 21 billion. The project is scheduled to be completed within a four-year timeframe.
The comprehensive plan encompasses a twin tunnel section spanning around 1.8 km and an elevated viaduct extending 3.4 km, equipped with four lanes in both directions. The design incorporates two unidirectional tunnels to maximise safety measures for commuters.
The project will commence opposite Juinagar Railway Station, following the route along the Sion-Panvel Highway and concluding at the 30 m wide existing road junction of Central Park and Gurudwara in Kharghar via Juinagar.
Upon completion, the Kharghar-Turbhe Tunnel Road is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time by approximately 30 minutes. The project aims to enhance accessibility and establish seamless connectivity within the MMR, linking crucial nodes in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane.
A primary objective of the Tunnel Road is to create direct links between key areas of Navi Mumbai, such as Vashi, Juinagar, and Nerul. This strategic interconnectivity is poised to stimulate economic development and urban expansion in the region, unlocking new opportunities for growth and prosperity.
In conclusion, the Kharghar-Turbhe Tunnel Road project exemplifies proactive urban planning and infrastructure development. With its potential to transform commuting patterns, drive economic growth, and promote sustainability, the project signals a new era of connectivity and accessibility for the residents of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
