Calcutta International School (CIS) has launched a major infrastructure expansion project worth Rs 220 million, aimed at creating world-class learning and recreational facilities within its existing campus off EM Bypass. The school broke ground for the 50,000 sq ft project, which will include a swimming pool, auditorium, state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, and a new library. 鈥淩ight now, we are cramped. The students are going to have better and increased learning and recreational space,鈥� said Tina Servaia, principal of the senior school. The expansion, which is expected to be completed within two years, is designed to align with 21st-century educational needs. 鈥淓ducation has evolved so much and this expansion is going to allow us to modernise and bring in more STEAM labs, research hubs, and quiet rooms,鈥� Servaia added. Established in 1953 for expatriate families, CIS shifted to its current 2-acre campus in 2006. With around 760 students currently enrolled, the school has clarified that the expansion is not meant to increase student intake but to enhance the existing learning environment. 鈥淭his is not only about adding physical space but about creating an environment that inspires curiosity and collaboration,鈥� said Pratima Nayar, principal of the junior school. The school, run as a parent-governed society without corporate or private ownership, is relying on endowments, alumni contributions, and parental support to fund the project. CIS has also offered naming rights to donors for specific areas like ICT labs, science labs, and sports facilities鈥攚hile keeping classrooms off-limits to such branding. 鈥淲e are mindful that we are a school and will maintain the sanctity of our learning spaces,鈥� Nayar emphasized. According to Shannon Jhunjhunwala, chairperson of the CIS Society and a parent, 鈥淭here is a deeply rooted understanding that meaningful collaboration between the school and the home significantly enhances a student鈥檚 learning experience.鈥� To drive the project forward, various task forces have been formed from among parents, said Jai Kejriwal, a parent and board member. The school is also reaching out to its alumni network and donors with connections to Bengal. The expansion reflects CIS鈥檚 long-standing commitment to providing a personalised, high-quality education in an inclusive, globally-minded environment.
