Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is poised to embark on a significant phase of expansion as it prepares to construct viaducts at Kathipara Junction, a critical juncture in the city's transportation network. The upcoming Phase II project, spanning 116 kilometers, will interconnect with the existing Phase I network, promising enhanced connectivity for commuters across Chennai.
Scheduled to stretch from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur via Kathipara Junction, this corridor (corridor 5) poses numerous challenges for CMRL due to its proximity to vital infrastructure, including flight paths and the operational zone of Phase I Metro Rail network.
Officials from CMRL have confirmed securing essential permissions from key regulatory bodies, including the Commissioner of Railway Safety and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), to commence viaduct construction at the arterial junction. Given the towering pillars and the airspace restrictions, meticulous planning is imperative to ensure safety and operational efficiency, stated a CMRL official.
The approval from AAI mandates strict adherence to permissible height levels during construction, considering the sensitive airspace around the area. Additionally, CMRL has obtained clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety, enabling construction activities at specific locations only during non-operational hours to mitigate any potential safety risks to passengers.
Upon completion, the Phase II network promises seamless connectivity for commuters traveling from areas such as Madhavaram, Anna Nagar, and Villivakkam to southern suburbs, including Madipakkam, Kilkattalai, Medavakkam, and Sholinganallur.
Meanwhile, progress on other corridors of Phase II, including corridor 4 (Light House to Poonamallee) and corridor 3 (Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Thirumayilai), remains on track, indicating CMRL's commitment to expanding Chennai's metro network efficiently.
As CMRL surmounts challenges and progresses with its ambitious expansion plans, the future holds the promise of enhanced connectivity and convenience for Chennai's residents and commuters alike.
