Coimbatore's Omni Bus Stand set for Rs 29.5 million renovation

The Omni Bus Stand on Sathy Main Road is renowned as one of the city's most heavily frequented bus terminals. While government buses operate from various termini like Singanallur, Gandhipuram, Ukkadam, and Mettupalayam Road, private bus services are centred at the Omni Bus Stand near the Gandhipuram flyover.
Spanning approximately 1.5 acres, the bus terminal had been grappling with issues such as limited space, inadequate facilities, and a growing number of private buses. Initially, plans were made to relocate the Omni Bus Stand due to traffic congestion following the completion of the Gandhipuram flyover, connecting Dr. Nanjappa Road with Sathy Main Road via the GP Signal. However, these plans were shelved after the announcement of the Vellalore Integrated Bus Terminus project.
While awaiting the relocation, Omni bus operators and the public faced delays when the Vellalore IBT project came to a halt. Given the circumstances, CCMC officials decided to revamp the existing Omni Bus Stand. A proposal for funding under the CGF scheme was submitted to the CMA, which has now approved the project and allocated the necessary funds.
CCMC Commissioner M Prathap outlined the upcoming improvements, which include facilities such as restrooms, roofing, dormitories, feeding rooms for mothers, cloakrooms, and enhanced parking options, along with road repairs. Work is set to commence shortly, with the project expected to conclude in approximately six months.
