DoT Cracks down on Spam Calls

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has intensified its fight against Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) and cyber fraud by disconnecting 0.175 million unauthorised Direct Inward Dialing (DID) numbers involved in spam and fraudulent activities.

As part of the Jan Bhagidari initiative, citizens have been actively reporting spam calls via the Chakshu module of Sanchar Saathi, enabling crowdsourced identification of telecom misuse. Commonly misused identifiers include numbers starting with 0731, 079, and 080, which have been used for fraudulent promotional activities through PRI lines, SIP trunks, and leased internet connections.

Key actions taken by DoT:
- Analysis of spam reports from Chakshu and public complaints
- Investigation by Licensed Service Areas (LSAs) into identified telecom resources
- Immediate suspension of telecom services for confirmed violators
- Directive to Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to ensure strict compliance with regulations

Call to Action for Enterprises & Consumers:
- Enterprises must ensure compliance with telecom regulations to avoid penalties, including disconnection.
- Citizens are encouraged to report spam calls via the Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in) or Sanchar Saathi App (available on Android and iOS).

The DoT remains committed to enhancing telecom security, consumer protection, and cybersecurity measures through continuous monitoring and enforcement.
