India inaugurates several development projects in Seychelles

In a virtual meeting with Seychelles this month, India inaugurated several high impact community development projects (HICDPs) in the African nation.

During the virtual event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan jointly inaugurated several development projects, including a new Magistrate's court building, a solar power plant, a fast patrol vessel (FPV) and 10 other HICDPs.

Situated next to the Supreme Court of Seychelles, built with Chinese assistance in 2013, the Magistrate's court building project is a landmark project that will help magistrate courts spread over different locations in Mahe into a single building.

The 1 MW solar power plant in Seychelles built with India's assistance would help fight the threat of climate change.

The vessel that will be inaugurated is a 48.9 m fast-patrol vessel built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineering Ltd (GRSE) at Rs 100 crore. The ship will be used for multi-purpose operations, such as patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching and search and rescue (SAR).

The FPV was delivered to Seychelles with the assistance of the Indian Navy on 16 March 2021, and has been handed over to the Seychelles Coast Guard by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the virtual event.

Modi said Seychelles is central to India's vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) during the virtual event.
