Larsen & Toubro ships second steam generator to Kaiga 11 months early

In a significant boost to India's nuclear power capabilities, Larsen & Toubro's (L&T) Heavy Engineering division has dispatched the second Steam Generator to Karnataka's Kaiga Atomic Power Station well ahead of schedule. This pivotal delivery, part of India's indigenous 10 x 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) Fleet Programme, was flagged off from the A M Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat.

This achievement, marking a dispatch 11 months prior to the agreed timeline, underscores L&T?s commitment to accelerating India's nuclear energy programme, aimed at meeting the country's net-zero carbon emissions target by 2070. This follows the delivery of the first Steam Generator to the same unit earlier in March this year, establishing a new benchmark in the industry.

The Steam Generator, a critical component in nuclear power generation, functions as a heat exchanger that transforms water into steam using the heat produced within a nuclear reactor core.

During the flag-off ceremony, Anil V Parab, Whole-time Director & Sr Executive Vice President of L&T Heavy Engineering & L&T Valves, highlighted the significance of the early delivery. He stated that L&T Heavy Engineering, as an industry trendsetter, continues to set global benchmarks in the delivery of critical nuclear equipment. He noted that the eleven-month early delivery of this second Steam Generator exemplifies their consistency and resilience, even amid challenges such as the pandemic and supply chain disruptions. Parab added that they are fully equipped and committed as the trusted and dedicated partner of the Department of Atomic Energy/NPCIL to help triple the current installed nuclear power capacity to 100 GWe by 2047.

The Heavy Engineering vertical of L&T has a proven track record of manufacturing and supplying technology-intensive equipment and systems globally across sectors such as refineries, oil & gas, petrochemicals, fertilisers, and nuclear power.
