The Maharashtra government cleared a proposal to set up a Konkan disaster management programme of Rs 3,200 crore.
The Konkan disaster mitigation project will take up various measures in the region to safeguard the people in case of any calamity.
Over the past two years, the Konkan strip has suffered two cyclones Nisarga in 2020 and Tauktae this year. Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts have also witnessed severe flooding after heavy rainfall, landslides, and other disasters.
A comprehensive four-year plan for capacity building, pre-planning steps to safeguard people, as well as proper utilisation of mitigation funds will be prepared, under the project.
State relief and rehabilitation Vijay Wadettiwar said that cyclones and floods have continuously destroyed the coastal districts. After the natural calamity, locals face many problems. The people in dangerous regions have to move to safer locations. Through the project, mitigation steps will be taken.
Senior officials said a system will be established for early warning to ensure better preparedness to deal with natural disasters as part of the project.
He said that the impact on locals would be less and response time would also be improved. It would not only save lives, but also decrease damage to crucial infrastructure.
For the project, the state has allocated Rs 3,200 crore, of which Rs 2,000 crore will be given by the state disaster management department, and the remaining Rs 1,200 crore will be presented by the state government over the following four years, the minister said.
