Pulianthope Canal Rebuild to Cost Rs 170 Million

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will reconstruct the British-era Pulianthope canal at an estimated cost of Rs 170 million to address persistent flooding issues.

Currently, rainwater from Munusamy Canal flows through Gandhi Canal and Otteri Nullah before reaching B-Canal. However, during heavy rains, overflow from Otteri Nullah often leads to flooding in Pulianthope. To mitigate this, the civic body plans an alternative route to divert rainwater from Demellows Road Canal directly to B-Canal.

The project also includes demolishing and rectifying the arch canal on Strahans Road to improve water flow and eliminating illegal sewage connections into the drains.

Flooding has long troubled residents of Pulianthope, Pattalam, KM Garden, and Anjaneyar Koil, often leaving them wading through stagnant water even after the monsoon. The GCC鈥檚 January resolution identified 226 families for eviction and allocated Rs 152.6 million in compensation through the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB).
