RIL to lead Rs 1 tn investment in Kandla's green units

Reliance Industries (RIL) and Larsen and Toubro (L&T) as well as energy companies Greenko Group and Welspun New Energy are planning to establish green hydrogen and green ammonia units at Gujarat?s Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla. Three industry executives, who are knowledgeable about the matter, have indicated that the project might witness a cumulative investment of up to Rs 1 trillion. They have highlighted that this investment would rank among the largest in the sector and the energy infrastructure domain in India.

It has been conveyed that the port authority had received expressions of interest for 14 land parcels, each spanning 300 acres, in October the previous year. These parcels were designated for 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia production. DPA allocated the plots to the four companies.

"As per our knowledge, DPA provided 14 plots encompassing approximately 4,000 acres of land in total. Out of this, RIL has been assigned six plots, L&T has been allotted five, Greenko Group has secured two, and Welspun New Energy has been given one plot. These four companies emerged as the highest bidders in the auction," one of them remarked.

The details have not been publicly disclosed due to the Model Code of Conduct being in effect before the general elections. A formal announcement will be made in June following the elections.

Kandla port aims to achieve a green ammonia production capacity of 7 MTPA and 1.4 MTPA of green hydrogen. Situated in the Gulf of Kutch, DPA stands as one of the prominent ports along the western coast of the country. Green hydrogen (GH2) is produced through the electrolysis of water utilizing power from renewable energy sources, with no emission of greenhouse gases. This aligns with the global endeavor to position green hydrogen as the fuel capable of assisting nations in achieving their net-zero emission objectives, considering that water is the sole byproduct. Ammonia represents the largest end-user segment for green hydrogen and holds a crucial role in enabling the production of GH2 at a significant scale.
