In a major boost to rural development in Assam, Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday virtually attended the Grihapravesh ceremony for 55,000 houses built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 鈥 Gramin (PMAY-G). The event, held in Guwahati, also marked the announcement of 3.76 lakh additional housing approvals for the current financial year.

Commending Assam鈥檚 progress, Shri Chouhan highlighted that the state has successfully completed 2 million rural homes under PMAY-G, significantly transforming the lives of marginalised and underprivileged communities.

In a step towards women鈥檚 economic empowerment, the Minister launched the Lakhimi Mistri initiative, a women mason training programme under PMAY-G. The initiative aims to impart masonry skills to rural women, thereby enhancing their employment prospects. Safety kits were distributed to the first five trainees at the event.

Shri Chouhan also inaugurated 21 Knowledge Centres across Assam under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF). These centres are designed to support rural agricultural infrastructure and provide farmers with timely access to resources, training, and information.

He praised the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, congratulating the state for its proactive implementation of rural housing schemes. Dr Sarma, who was present at the event, reaffirmed Assam鈥檚 commitment to empowering rural communities, particularly farmers and women, through sustainable infrastructure and livelihood development.

Also present were Shri Atul Bora, Assam鈥檚 Agriculture Minister, and Shri Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development.
