Steel stalwart

In what is being viewed as a surprise choice, India's largest steel maker has appointed TV Narendran as its Managing Director-designate for India and South East Asia. The 48-year old, who will be the youngest managing director Tata Steel has ever had, will take over his new assignment on November 1 following the retirement of the current incumbent, HM Nerurkar. Narendran who is presently Vice President, Safety and Flat Products Division has been at the right place at the right time holding several posts, including that of President and CEO between 2008 and 2010. In 2004, he steered Tata Steel's first acquisition NatSteel Holdings, Singapore where he played a key role in the company's integration and financial turnaround. Beginning as Executive Vice President of NatSteel Holdings he slowly moved up the ladder to become its President & CEO in 2008. Now as the new bossman of Tata Steel, and at a time when the company is going through tough times, Narendran will have to demonstrate that he has steel in his constitution and will bring his relations with suppliers, customers and labour to the table. A mechanical engineering graduate from REC, Trichy, Narendran joined Tata Steel in 1988 after completing his MBA from IIM, Calcutta.
