India Boosts Green Steel Initiatives to Cut CO Emissions by 2070

The Indian government has implemented several initiatives to reduce CO? emissions in the steel sector, focusing on the transition to renewable energy in steel production.

The Ministry of Steel has introduced the Taxonomy for Green Steel, which establishes standards for defining and categorizing low-emission steel. Additionally, a comprehensive report titled "Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan" has been released, outlining a strategy for achieving sustainability and net-zero emissions by 2070. This report aligns with recommendations from 14 task forces constituted for this purpose and is available on the Ministry of Steel's website.

To further promote decarbonisation, the Ministry has awarded seven pilot projects aimed at utilizing hydrogen in steel manufacturing under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. These projects are expected to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions in the sector.

Moreover, the National Solar Mission, initiated in January 2010 by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, supports the adoption of solar energy, contributing to emission reduction efforts in the steel industry. These measures collectively aim to enhance sustainability in steel production and align with India's long-term climate goals.
