Three members of Parliament (MPs) from Belgaum area-Prabhakar Kore, Suresh Angadi and Ramesh Katti-have urged the Centre to expand the existing airport in Belgaum to facilitate air travel to Mumbai, Goa and other domestic areas. The three MPs have recently met the Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh and put forth their demand. Ajit Singh also assured the MPs to initiate necessary steps to expand the airport at Sambra in Belgaum.

The MPs have explained the Centre the importance of Belgaum to have an expanded airport. The Karnataka government has recently taken initiative to develop Belgaum as its second capital. It has also started to hold Assembly sessions in the border city. Hence the MPs urged Singh to expand the airport at Sambra and introduce flights to all domestic destinations.

According to the MPs, the State government has already allotted more than 370 acres for expansion of the airport located 12 km away from the city. As per the demand of Airports Authority of India (AAI), the government provided land but construction was delayed, they said adding that the AAI should take steps to extend the runway and provide additional facilities at the airport.
