Adani takes up O&M of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport

The Adani Group has taken over the operations and management of the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor told the media that the people would support the development works of the airport, keeping in mind the development of Kerala and its surroundings.

He said that for the progress of Thiruvananthapuram, a neat airport with the highest standard equipment is required instead of increasing the number of aircraft and airlines operating from the airport.

After Adani announced the acquisition of the management of the airport, Tharoor said that the private players would get support from the people if the development work rose to the expectations.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) opposed the handing over of the airport to the Adani Group but, Tharoor said that the privatisation would help in the development of Kerala and its surroundings. He added that it would attract potential investors towards Kerala.

Rajya Sabha MP Suresh Gopi also approved the privatisation of the airport. Denying the allegations, he said that the government would only hand over the airport to the company and not sell it.

Previously, the State Assembly had passed a resolution to protect the privatisation of the airport, with the CM Pinarayi Vijayan criticising the takeover by Adani. He told the media that the takeover was not for development but to protect the interests of monopolies.

It is the first among the four airports in Kerala, which was established in 1932. Earlier, it was owned and operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
