Centre Approves Puri Airport Project Worth Rs 5.63 Bn

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has granted in-principle approval for the establishment of the Shree Jagannath International Airport in Puri, Odisha. The decision came four days after Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi urged the Centre to expedite the project.

Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu stated that the approval signifies a key milestone for Odisha鈥檚 air infrastructure. The proposed greenfield airport will strengthen last-mile connectivity and boost religious tourism. It is also expected to enhance direct air links between Puri and major metropolitan cities across India.

Puri, one of India's most revered pilgrimage sites and home to Lord Jagannath, attracts Mns of tourists annually. The development is aimed at supporting regional growth and making air travel more accessible.

The airport will be developed over 1,164 acres, including 68 acres of forest and 221.48 acres of private land in Sipasarubali and Sandhapur under Brahmagiri tehsil. The estimated project cost is Rs 5.63 Bn.

Before this approval, a team from the Environment Ministry visited the site, and two public hearings were conducted regarding land acquisition. The Odisha Transport department has also invited the Airports Authority of India to participate in the bidding process.
