The fourth runway at Delhi airport had been opened. This would enable the largest airport in the country to increase its capacity from the current 1,500 flights per day to almost 2,000. With the addition of this new runway, Delhi airport became the only airport in South Asia to have four runways. According to Jyotiraditya Scindia, Civil Aviation minister, the expanded terminal and the new runway would significantly enhance the airport's capacity, allowing it to serve more than 109 million passengers. He even mentioned that Delhi airport would surpass Atlanta in terms of capability. The minister further stated that he had instructed the airport operator to commence the use of the renovated Terminal 1 before the winter rush begins. Additionally, the introduction of a new elevated taxiway called Eastern Cross Taxiways would expedite the aircraft's exit from the taxiway, reducing the taxi time. Scindia predicted that over the next three to four years, the fleet capacity of the country would increase from 720 aircraft to nearly 1,500. He also anticipated a significant growth in the number of passengers, with the metro capacities projected to increase from 221 million to around 400 million. Viedeh Kumar Jaipuriar, the CEO of Delhi Airport, expressed his satisfaction with the recent achievement, stating that it reinforced their dedication to providing world-class aviation infrastructure. He expressed gratitude to various teams, including the aviation ministry, Airports Economic Regulatory Authority, Airports Authority of India, and contractors, for their collective efforts and support. Delhi Airport currently handles 75-80 aircraft movements per hour. Its runway system consists of a northerly runway known as 27-28 North and a southerly runway known as 29 South.
