Jharkhand's remote areas to get roads

Keeping in mind the difficult terrain and dominance of rebels in Jharkhand, the government has decided to provide roads to even those villages which have a population of more than 100, said Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh on March 23. He promised road connectivity to even the remotest village in Jharkhand, taking the initial steps to usher development in these parts of the country.

Initially, the government had plans to connect approach road to villages with a population of more than 250. A memorandum of understanding was signed by the Union Rural Development Ministry, the Jharkhand government and IRCON International for construction of roads in Garhwa, Simdega, Ranchi, Gumla and Lohardaga districts under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY).

Around 2,000 km rural road is to be constructed in 2013-14. The company, a central public sector undertaking, has been tasked with construction of 2,000-km roads and 56 bridges with an investment of around Rs 850 crore. About 9,000 villages will be benefited by the roads project, said Ramesh. In 2011-12 and 2012-13, around 1,200-km and 1,400-km, respectively, rural roads were constructed in the state under PMGSY.
