Infrastructure development is rapidly gaining momentum in the nation, with a particular emphasis on the construction of highways and expressways. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the central government is actively engaged in establishing efficient connections between major cities to streamline nationwide travel. A noteworthy expressway project, connecting Punjab and Gujarat, is currently in progress, reflecting the government's dedication to enhancing transportation connectivity.
The National Highway Authority (NHAI) reports that the construction of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway, spanning 1,316 kilometres and linking Amritsar in Punjab to Jamnagar in Gujarat, is nearing completion. This expressway traverses the desert and sandy areas of Haryana, promising substantial benefits for both the general public and the transportation of goods and businesses.
A significant portion of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway, approximately 500 kilometres in Rajasthan, has been operationalised. Stretching from Jhakhrawali village in Hanumangarh district to Khetlawas in Jalore, this section incurred a construction cost of Rs 111.25 billion. The opening of this green corridor is expected to streamline travel between major cities in Rajasthan and Haryana-Punjab.
Currently, the distance between Amritsar and Jamnagar is 1,516 kilometres, a length projected to be reduced by 216 kilometres upon the completion of the expressway. The journey duration, presently spanning approximately 26 hours, is anticipated to halve to 13 hours with the completion of the expressway. The high-speed corridor is designed to accommodate vehicles at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour.
The Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway is poised to benefit the states of Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Gujarat. Furthermore, it will be seamlessly connected to the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, facilitating easier travel to Delhi and Kashmir. This connectivity will streamline road travel from Gujarat to Kashmir.
Beyond this, the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway is expected to bring significant advantages to various cities, including Amritsar, Bathinda, Moga, Hanumangarh, Suratgarh, Bikaner, Nagaur, Jodhpur, Barmer, and Jamnagar. The infrastructure development of the expressway includes the creation of 5 railway overbridges, 20 river overbridges, 26 interchanges, 55 underpasses, and 311 small underpasses. Additionally, the installation of car charging stations at intervals of 20 to 30 kilometres along the route is set to enhance both convenience and sustainability.
