Bengaluru-Hyderabad highway to get six-lane upgradation

The commuters using the Bengaluru-Hyderabad highway will now be relieved as the route is going to become a six-lane highway, to provide a hassle-free movement of vehicular traffic between the two-state capitals.

Recently, Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy told the media that the Bengaluru-Hyderabad, NH 44 shall be turned into a six-lane road from the existing four-lane road. It will also have a real-time digital information management system.

An official release said that the approximate cost of the project is Rs 4,750 crore.

A traffic expert, Nanda Kishore, told the media that the route is very popular and every day, thousands of people commute between the two cities. Even though there are some trains, the major portion of the railway track is a single one. Therefore, even a super-fast Rajdhani train, requires over 11 hours to cover this distance.

Whereas, the travel time from Bengaluru to Hyderabad by flight is one hour. But people need to travel to the airport for an hour from Bengaluru city and wait for hours to board a flight and later travel another hour from the Hyderabad airport to the city area. Hence, people prefer traveling by road.

Earlier the road between Bengaluru and Hyderabad was a two-lane road. And it would take about 12 hours to cover the distance of 570 km. However, the increase in traffic has led to an increase in travel time. Hence, the flyover had been widened and made into a four-lane road, along with bypasses which reduced travel time to eight hours. With six-laning it is expected to decrease even further.
