Bengaluru's Kamaraj Road to become one-way by mid-May

A section of Kamaraj Road, which links MG Road and Cubbon Road, is set to be opened to the public by mid-May, according to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL). The BMRCL had previously set April-end as the deadline for reopening one-half of the road. The traffic police have decided to implement a one-way system for the time being, allowing vehicles only from MG Road towards Cubbon Road.
Kamaraj Road, spanning 220 meters, had been closed in June 2019 for the construction of the MG Road underground Metro station for the Pink Line (Nagawara to Kalena Agrahara) beneath it. This station will serve as an interchange with the existing Purple Line. The closure of the road led to inconvenience for commuters heading to Shivajinagar or Commercial Street, who were required to detour via Anil Kumble Circle or Trinity Circle, causing congestion on MG Road.
BMRCL's Chief Public Relations Officer, BL Yashavanth Chavan, stated, "Work is progressing continuously. The traffic police have conducted an inspection and are planning another one. We anticipate a partial reopening of Kamaraj Road by mid-May."
Another senior official mentioned, "Currently, only 8 meters of the road width is being restored, along with a 2.5-meter-wide footpath. The remaining 12 meters will remain closed for six to nine months as it is necessary to install equipment underground for the station."
DCP Traffic - West, Anita B Haddannavar, who recently inspected the road, stated to TNIE, "We are eager to open this connecting road as soon as possible due to the congestion on MG Road. There is significant demand from the public, especially for those heading to Commercial Street who currently have to take a circuitous route. Our plan is to allow one-way traffic for now, from MG Road to Cubbon Road."
