Chandigarh Administration Plans New Road Extension for Traffic Relief

The UT administration has announced plans for the construction of a new extension to Vikas Marg, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion from Sectors 39 West and 56 West. This new road, which is part of the Chandigarh Master Plan, will act as a divider between the Bulk Market in Sector 56 West and Annaj Mandi in Sector 39 West. The road will eventually connect to Mohali鈥檚 PR-5 road. Following an extensive ground survey, the engineering department has prepared a financial estimate of Rs 5.5 crore for the project, awaiting approval from senior officials. The proposed design includes a six-lane road spanning 700 metres, with a dedicated slow carriageway for slower-moving vehicles. The main carriageway will be 10.5 metres wide, while the slow lane will be 7.5 metres wide.

鈥淭his road will serve the heavy vehicles visiting the Bulk Market and Anaaj Mandi and will also assist traffic flowing to Vikas Marg. In the future, it will connect with Mohali鈥檚 PR-5 road,鈥 said sources within the Chandigarh administration.

The project has been included in the UT engineering wing鈥檚 agenda for the upcoming financial year, with funds earmarked in the 2025-2026 budget. If financial approval is granted, the tender process will begin promptly. Additionally, the engineering department has identified several locations along the Chandigarh-Mohali border requiring new roads or significant widening to improve commuter flow between the two cities.
