Coimbatore Flyover Extension Under Feasibility Study

The National Highways (NH) wing of the State Highways Department is set to conduct a feasibility study on extending the Saibaba Colony flyover on Mettupalayam Road. This follows demands from motorists and local groups to extend the flyover up to Avinashilingam University near the District Forest Office.

The NH wing is currently constructing the Saibaba Colony flyover, with completion targeted by the end of this year. So far, around ten pillars have been erected, and the next phase is set to begin soon.

With the project progressing, local residents, motorists, and AIADMK鈥檚 CCMC council floor leader Prabhakaran have urged officials to extend the flyover, citing benefits for daily commuters and tourists heading to the Nilgiris. Public Works and Highways Minister EV Velu recently assured that the request would be considered.

Following the minister鈥檚 directive, NH officials have now planned a feasibility study to assess possible expansion routes. A senior NH official stated, 鈥淲e will explore extending the flyover to Avinashilingam University. As the current financial year (FY 24-25) nears completion, extension works will be planned for FY 25-26 with a separate DPR.鈥

If approved, the extended flyover could significantly improve traffic flow on Mettupalayam Road and ease congestion in Coimbatore.
