Construction materials dumped on the side of the road in various locations throughout New Town not only take up road space but also pollute the air.
Residents of street number 622 in the township's Action Area Il raised the issue recently in a WhatsApp group, claiming that construction materials have been lying on the roadside for a long time.
Several buildings are being constructed in the township, and the construction materials piled up here and there not only narrow the road space but also put pedestrians and motorists at risk of an accident.
Residents claimed that construction materials, which are also clogging drains and gully pits, caused waterlogging in several areas of the township before Puja this year.
Construction waste dumped throughout New Town is a major issue. The relevant authorities have been notified. According to Samaresh Das, chairperson of New Town Forum and News (NTFN), an umbrella organisation of resident forums in New Town, either they have to stop the construction work or take stern action against those who are causing the problem.
A consulting physician, Shankha Subhra Chaudhuri, said that those who suffer from dust allergies may be affected by the dust particles. Those with asthma or allergies should take precautions such as wearing a mask or covering their nose with a handkerchief.
Construction materials should not be strewn across the roads, according to NKDA officials.
A NKDA official said that they will send notices to the contractors, requesting that they remove the debris or face a fine.
