E-challans for speeding on highways

The traffic police announced their plans to initiate automatic e-challaning at the recently constructed elevated flyover and Ladhowal bypass in order to curb overspeeding. They had written to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), requesting the installation of cameras at both locations.

The elevated flyover on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur road had recently been opened to the public, and the Ladhowal bypass towards South City road was already operational. The traffic police had noticed that overspeeding was a significant problem on both flyovers. According to Sameer Verma, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) - Traffic, "We are aware of the issue of overspeeding on both stretches.

Speed limit signboards of 60 kmph have been placed for commuters. However, to enforce the limit, we plan to install automated e-challan cameras." He mentioned that similar cameras were operational on various highways and expressways across the country.

"These cameras will capture the registration plates of overspeeding vehicles, and an e-challan will be issued to the vehicle owner. We have discussed this project with NHAI officials, and they have agreed to proceed. We have written to NHAI, and the work is expected to commence by November," he explained. The Ludhiana police had been vigilant in curbing overspeeding within the city. Between March and September of that year, they had issued over 2,100 challans for overspeeding.
