The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the development of a 12.4 km ropeway from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib Ji in Uttarakhand. The project, sanctioned under the National Ropeways Development Programme 鈥� Parvatmala Pariyojana, will be executed on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) basis at a total capital cost of Rs 27.3 billion. At present, reaching Hemkund Sahib Ji is an arduous journey requiring a 21-km uphill trek from Govindghat, undertaken either on foot, ponies, or palanquins. The introduction of this ropeway is set to significantly enhance accessibility for pilgrims visiting the revered Sikh shrine and tourists travelling to the UNESCO-listed Valley of Flowers. By ensuring all-weather last-mile connectivity, the project is expected to bolster tourism and provide a safer, more convenient alternative for visitors. The ropeway will be developed as a public-private partnership and will incorporate two advanced technologies. The initial stretch from Govindghat to Ghangaria (10.55 km) will employ the Monocable Detachable Gondola (MDG) system, while the second segment from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib Ji (1.85 km) will feature the Tricable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology. This modern infrastructure will have a design capacity of 1,100 passengers per hour per direction (PPHPD), translating to a daily carrying capacity of approximately 11,000 passengers. Apart from improving accessibility, the ropeway project is poised to create substantial employment opportunities. Jobs will be generated not only in construction and operations but also in allied sectors such as hospitality, travel, food and beverage (F&B), and year-round tourism. This initiative aligns with the government鈥檚 broader vision of promoting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation while strengthening local economies. Hemkund Sahib Ji, situated at an altitude of 15,000 feet in Chamoli district, holds immense religious significance. Open for nearly five months a year between May and September, the Gurudwara attracts approximately 1.5 to 2 lakh devotees annually. Additionally, the ropeway will serve as a crucial link to the Valley of Flowers, a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot in the Garhwal Himalayas. Market and Industry Outlook India鈥檚 ropeway sector is witnessing a surge in investment, driven by the government's emphasis on alternative transport solutions in difficult terrains.
