Govt Clarifies: No Satellite-Based Tolling Rollout on 1 May 2025

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has clarified that contrary to recent media reports, there is no decision to launch a satellite-based tolling system nationwide from 1st May 2025. The existing FASTag-based toll collection system will not be replaced at this time.

To streamline traffic and reduce congestion at toll plazas, MoRTH and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are instead rolling out a pilot ANPR–FASTag-based Barrier-Less Tolling System at selected locations.

How the New System Works This hybrid model integrates Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras with existing Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) FASTag technology. Vehicles will be identified through their number plates and FASTags, allowing seamless, non-stop toll collection.

Motorists who fail to comply with toll payments may receive e-Notices, with possible consequences including FASTag suspension and penalties under the VAHAN system.

NHAI has already invited bids for this barrier-less tolling infrastructure at select toll plazas. The system’s efficacy, operational performance and user feedback will determine whether it is scaled nationally.
