Jammu and Kashmir constructed a record 3,300 km of rural roads under several schemes in 2020-21, hence offering safe and secure all-weather connectivity to remote areas across the union territory. J&K chief secretary B V R Subrahmanyam told the media that the administration has now set a target to construct 4,200 km of road length in 2021-22. The work is done under the flagship programme Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Further, the chief secretary said that the public works department (PWD) registered an unusual achievement by completing 3,300 km of rural roads under several schemes, and should employ the gained expertise in fast-tracked project execution to deliver even better outcomes. The proposed target for 2021-22 covers 800 km and 3,400 km rural roads in Kashmir and Jammu regions, each. Adding to this he urged the PWD principal secretary to regularly review district-wise progress for timely analysis of barriers and associated challenges.
