J&K lags in PMGSY target of 4,841 km road laying

The J&K Union Territory administration informed the centre that it will not be able to execute the road length construction of over 3,300 km under the PMGSY or Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in the ongoing fiscal having a target of 4,841 km.

Official sources stated that the administration of Jammu and Kashmir has informed the National Rural Road Infrastructure Development Agency (NRRIDA) about the inability to build roads of over 3,300 km in the year 2021-22.

The annual physical target that was allocated to the J&K UT is 4,841 km. Out of which only 1,526 km has been constructed. The UT said that they are not going to be able to complete construction over 3,300 km, stating some of the reasons including the falling of trees. This had been mentioned in the pre- empowered committee鈥檚 record that was held on December 9, 2021, for the discussion of new projects that the J&K government submitted for approval.

As per the record note, the administration was alerted to present the work-wise constraints along with the plan of action to see if the targets can work out.

The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) was the scheme that was launched with a vision to provide all-weather road connectivity to the village areas lacking road connectivity. The former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee introduced this scheme in the year 2000.
