Jalpaiguri Municipality has submitted Rs 60 million Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the state's Department of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, seeking funds for road renovation.
The municipality has identified the need for road repairs in several wards under its jurisdiction. Once the department grants approval, the renovation work will commence through a tender process.
As per the 2011 census, Jalpaiguri Municipality covered an area of 12.97 square kilometres and had a population of 108,700 residents across 25 wards. However, current estimates suggest a population of approximately 200,000.
The deteriorating condition of roads within the municipality is primarily attributed to increased traffic. Although significant repairs were carried out prior to the 2021 municipal elections, certain wards still require further attention.
Sandeep Mahato, the chairman-in-council of Jalpaiguri Municipality, revealed that a tender worth Rs 14.4 million was awarded last week for the construction of seven roads. Some work has also been undertaken through the 'Paray Paray Samadhan' program.
Mahato highlighted recent road constructions in various wards, such as ward no 9, 10, 14, 7, 5, and 19, with a budget of Rs 65 million. However, he emphasised the ongoing need for road renovation in specific areas.
Mahato mentioned the preparation of a list identifying the roads requiring attention. Additionally, Rs 60 million DPR has been drafted and sent to the Department of Urban Development for the construction of these roads. He assured that the tender process for the project would proceed according to the availability of funds allocated by the department, adhering to the designated budget.
