Kolkata Police to use artificial intelligence to scan CCTV images

The Kolkata Police plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) powered software to verify CCTV images to identify real-time offenders, including helmetless bikers and vehicles illegal parking.

Currently, there are 2,500 CCTV cameras in the city, out of which 125 can read licence plates.

The Kolkata Police has asked the technological experts for a detailed presentation for understanding machine learning tools, which are to be used to identify helmetless bikers and illegal parking.

Last year, around 7.3 lakh traffic rules violations were detected through CCTV footage, out of which 39.4 lakh were recorded in Kolkata.

Many private firms and academic institutions are also working on projects to identify helmetless bikers and their licence plates in real-time in Kolkata. Technology is being explored to reduce risk to officers who physically try to stop these vehicles at their own risk.

Police also want to detect illegal parking and track vehicle licence plate locations.

The AI software will be installed in the number plate-reading road cameras, on the servers of Lalbazar police control rooms, and in the central control room. It can be achieved by embedding a card into CCTV cameras. When these cameras detect vehicles in no-parking zones, they will send alerts through artificial image recognition and processing solutions. It can be implemented in real-time via a webcam or a CCTV camera.

IIT Hyderabad has developed an AI system to detect helmetless bikers in CCTV footage. The Hyderabad City Police signed an agreement with the institution to access the footage.

For detecting illegal parking of vehicles, the system will use an IP camera to capture and transfer images to the police. The software will be used to perform automatic image feature extraction.

The AI software is resistant to environmental effects such as shadow effects, illumination changes and weather conditions. These systems can issue challans. The AI system will be a fully automatic web interface for monitoring and verifying alerts, which is then linked to the existing website to generate challans and send SMS to the bikers.
