Land acquisition approval revives Delhi's Urban Extension Road-II Project

In a decisive move aimed at realising the long-delayed Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has given approval for the acquisition of more than 2 bighas of land in Bharthal village in southwest Delhi. According to officials, this land parcel plays a crucial role in the timely completion of the project, and the delay in its acquisition had previously set the project back by seven years.
UER-II, envisioned to link north Delhi with the Delhi-Jaipur highway, was designed to alleviate congestion at Dhaula Kuan and various intersections along both outer and inner ring roads. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had sought permission to acquire 2 bigha and 4.5 biswa of land in Bharthal in April 2016. However, ongoing litigations hindered the acquisition process, resulting in a significant delay for the road project outlined in the Delhi Master Plan 2021 as the third ring road for the city.
Originally proposed by the DDA to connect NH1 and NH2, the UER-II aims to link areas such as Narela, Bawana, and Rohini in North Delhi, Dwarka sub-city, IGI airport, and Gurgaon. Once operational, the road will serve as an alternative route for both commuters and freight traffic traveling between the southern and eastern parts of Haryana, encompassing districts like Ambala, Panipat, Karnal, Rohtak, and Bahadurgarh, providing connectivity to Delhi, Gurgaon, and extending up to Rajasthan.
