Planning for the Bharatmala Phase-II project has been started by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and roads with a cumulative length of 5,000 km have been identified to be built under the project, a senior government official told media sources. Under the Bharatmala project, around 65,000 km of national highways are to be constructed in two phases. NHAI will build 34,800 km of national highways by 2022 under the first phase. Of the 34,800 km of national highways under this phase, over half has been awarded, and detailed project reports (DPRs) are now being prepared by the government, to be built under the second phase. NHAI told sources that expressways and access-controlled highways would be the focus of the government under the second phase. Phase-I of the Bharatmala is to be awarded completely by FY23. The first phase of the Bharatmala project approved in 2017 included the construction of 24,800 km of national highways and remaining 10,000 km of road works under the national highways development programme.
