Public Works Department Minister Nilesh Cabral announced that eighteen construction firms have submitted their bids for the elevated six-lane highway corridor in Porvorim. Cabral stated that the bids are currently under evaluation and only those meeting the technical criteria will proceed to the financial bidding stage. The project, valued at Rs 4.746 billion, was tendered in June and is slated for completion within 24 months. PWD has already cleared most of the encroachments along NH-66 to make way for this construction. Funding for the project, sanctioned by the Union government, amounts to Rs 6.414 billion. While the construction might cause traffic disruptions in Porvorim, government officials are actively seeking alternative routes to minimise congestion. The proposed elevated road will span 5.2 kilometers, with entry points at Sangolda junction and the Neo-Majestic hotel. The Porvorim stretch is the final segment of the highway improvement initiative in Goa, extending from Patradevi to Bambolim, yet to be widened. Legal challenges related to land acquisition for the six-lane highway on stilts at Porvorim had delayed expansion efforts, leading to persistent traffic issues. This concern had been previously raised by the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasising the logistics sector's challenges to Minister Cabral. The elevated highway project aims to alleviate congestion on the NH-66 section leading to Panaji and enhance accessibility to the Mopa airport. Additionally, this elevated corridor is part of the larger highway expansion initiative spanning from Karaswada to Bambolim. Once completed, the entire four/six lane project is expected to facilitate speeds of 80-100 kmph, a significant improvement from the current 40-60 kmph, providing a smoother and more efficient transportation route.
