The newly constructed Pamban Bridge, a 2.08-kilometer long structure, brings several innovative engineering solutions to enhance connectivity and accommodate maritime needs. Here are six standout features of the bridge:
1. Vertical lift span for maritime navigation
At the core of the bridge is its 72.5-meter vertical lift span, which can be raised to allow ships to pass below. This feature, the first of its kind in India, is designed to meet the needs of maritime traffic while facilitating uninterrupted rail movement.
2. Robust foundation for future expansion
The bridge's foundation is supported by 333 piles and 101 pile caps, designed to accommodate two railway tracks and allow for future expansion to handle increasing rail traffic.
3. Early completion of substructure
The substructure, including the pile foundations and pile caps, was completed ahead of schedule, ensuring a timely progression of the project.
4. Successful trial run
A successful trial run was conducted over the 1.5-kilometer section from the Mandapam end, verifying the structural integrity of the bridge before its official use.
5. Fully welded box sections for superstructure
The bridge's superstructure is built with fully welded box sections, removing the need for splice joints in the approach spans, which enhances its durability and stability.
6. Increased clearance for larger vessels
Standing 3 meters taller than its predecessor, the new Pamban Bridge offers greater clearance, allowing larger vessels to navigate more freely beneath it.
